How Loss Built a Practice Based on Compassion
The “Beside the Point” feature in the Oyster Pointer centers around the story of how Dr. Owen and Dr. James Dollar came together at a pivotal time and built a practice built on compassion, kindness and integrity. Read a snippet of the article below:
The practice was opened in 2001 by Dr. Matt Dollar, son of Dr. James Dollar, with a mission to follow in his father’s footsteps and provide his community with unparalleled dental care. Sadly, Dr. Matt Dollar passed away a few years later. Continuing his son’s mission and upholding his legacy, Dr. James Dollar purchased the practice in 2007.
Around this time, Owen was experiencing a loss of his own — the passing of his father, a family physician. Growing up, Owen watched his father treat patients young and old with compassion and respect, inspiring him to pursue a career in which he could do the same.
In 2019, Owen purchased the practice and began working alongside Dr. James Dollar. The two dentists, connecting over their shared experiences and treatment philosophies, built both a professional and personal bond, shaping the practice to be what it is today.
“Dr. Dollar and I were meant to come together at this time,” says Owen. “We have so much in common — our approach to dentistry, our goals, our personalities and our life experiences. Together, we were able to turn Tidewater Family Dentistry into a place that prioritizes family values and patient-doctor relationships built on trust.”
